Bluehost FTP Setup

Bluehost FTP settings – Bluehost server FTP access

Website dashboard is accessible through Bluehost or wordpress. It allows adding, editing and deleting web pages, posts, images and comments.  It allows installing and deleting plugins, tools, and themes in web server. Dashboard allows controlling everything in visual mode. But it does not show the framework or folder structure of a website. Each website has a root directory in the space allocated in web server. This root directory has files for configuration and sub-directories for software.  Web hosting service provider allow user to access the space allocated in web server through FTP.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard network protocol used to transfer computer files from one host to another.  User can access files and folders in web server from his computer through FTP client. User has permission to add, edit and delete files and folders in web server through FTP client application. It allows user to efficiently upload files.

Web hosting service creates FTP account for a user after signup. You will receive email about FTP account details.

Download and install free FTP client software FileZilla or WinSCP. Enter FTP account connection information.

FileZilla:
Launch FileZilla, Click File and then SiteManager. Enter the following connection details.
  • Host: You should have received this by email. Check your email registered with Bluehost.
  • Port: 21
  • Protocol: FTP - File Transfer Protocol
  • Encryption: Use plain FTP
  • Logon Type: Normal
  • User: You should have received this by email. Check your email registered with Bluehost.
  • Password: Click change your password hyperlink in email and set password. Enter the password here.
Click Connect.
Once it is connected to server, files in web server will be listed on right window. Close FileZilla to disconnect from server.

WinSCP:
Launch WinSCP, Click File and then SiteManager. Enter the following connection details.
  • File Protocol: FTP
  • Encryption: No Encryption
  • Host Name: You should have received this by email. Check your email registered with Bluehost.
  • Port Number: 21
  • User name: You should have received this by email. Check your email registered with Bluehost.
  • Password: Click change your password hyperlink in email and set password. Enter the password here
Click Login.
Once it is connected to server, files in web server will be listed on right window. To disconnect from server, Click Session and then Disconnect.
